KIERA + CHRIS + MANNY

Sunshine

Measuring up to its cute-as-a-button address, prepare yourself for some serious warm and fuzzies as we embark on the home and story of Kiera, Chris and Manny.

If you get jealous easily, we suggest you don’t continue reading this #HousePerv beyond this point!

With an address like ‘Sunshine Parade’ you’d expect something pretty spectacular and let me tell you, this stunning home does not disappoint!

A picture-perfect masterpiece perched up in the quiet streets of Sunshine, houses a playful, endearing (and insanely attractive) family who have seriously conquered their renovation and created something truly remarkable.

At every turn this extraordinary home showcases breathtaking views of Lake Macquarie, vaporising your worries and recharging your batteries from the crazy day-to-day. After taking in the view and absorbing the warmth within the walls, it’s no wonder their magical home is the focal point of their truly blissful and adventurous lifestyle.

Q: Firstly – please tell us a little about who is currently living at your home.

Sunshine Parade is currently home to myself (Kiera), my husband Chris, son Manny who is 5, our rescue cat Alby and two border collies Frankie and Cali.

Q: Now onto your beautiful home – can you tell us about its story from when you purchased the property until today?

We purchased the property in July 2018. We were living in the Hunter Valley and had always dreamed of making the “sea change.”

My dad sent me a link to the house we had never looked at this side of Lake Mac and didn’t even know Sunshine was a suburb. Chris said “no” as soon as he looked it but my parents kept insisting it was a great opportunity on a great block so curiosity won us over and we drove down for a look. We drove down the hill and staring back at us was 180 degree views of Lake Macquarie and Chris was sold!

We sold our home in Nov 2018 and moved into the cottage, it was two bedrooms along with a rabbit warren of other rooms but it was neat and tidy and had so much charm. We lived in it for the next 6 months planning our dream home. Demo/renovations commenced in July 2019 with East Maitland Building and we moved back in the week before Christmas 2019.

Q: What are you happiest about with the home and how it looks and functions?

We love the way the home has been orientated to take in the beautiful views of Lake Mac. The hub of the home is the huge open plan living, kitchen, entertaining deck and the centrepiece and favourite place to waste way too much time is the custom made 3.6 metre front window.

We really loved the original cottage and with the help of our amazing designer Zoe from Your Home Designs we were able to keep the existing shape and footprint of the house but opened up all of the inside spaces as well as adding the huge decking to the side.

Q: What or who are your key style inspirations?

My mum has always been a style inspiration, her home is full of character and she has never followed the trends. An eclectic mix of styles and cultures she has always collected one-off pieces to last a lifetime. There is one or two Indian consoles that I could sneak away in to my own home!

Instagram really helped me to refine my own style there is so many interior and home accounts around these days that allow normal everyday people to create and share what they are doing as well as the professionals who have a platform to share much more of their work.

I do love the girls from Three Birds Renovations, Kyal and Kara, The Stables and some of our own local ladies Caitlin from The House on Beach Road and Anna from Moore Creative have all given me inspiration along the way.

Q: How you would describe your interior style?

I joked around during the build and came up with my own hashtag because my style was a mixed bag:

#moderncoastalwhitetimberconcretewithahintofhamptonsandsomebohobeachontheside

I have always been drawn to that laid back natural beachy vibe. I love big rustic bohemian pieces and warm earthy elements. While I love the Aussie take on Hamptons and the all-white modern coastal style that is so popular now I still wanted our house to feel like a home, with warmth and some colour and things that actually hold meaning not just look pretty for a picture. I have pieces we have collected over the past 10 years from our travels that played a huge part in how I styled and planned out our new home. We created a neutral space and I hope to continue adding layers to our story as time goes on.

Q: What you love most about living in your house?

What we love most about living in our home would have to be all of it! There is something so calming about our home, my husband tells me almost daily that he still pinches himself that this is where we live. It almost feels like a holiday the smell of the lake, the sound of the birds the incredible sunrise every morning from our window.

Q: Can you tell us about the location and what do you enjoy most?

Our suburb is so peaceful and quiet with only one road in and out, we don’t have traffic and sometimes all that you can hear over the birds is our dogs barking (haha). There is only a couple of streets and we are surrounded by bush. 200m to our left is a boat ramp and jetty as well as a huge big reserve, park and coastal bush trail. Straight across from us is a public reserve big jetty and swimming baths. We walk, ride and run most days and our two dogs are living their best life with lake swims on the agenda every morning or afternoon.

We have an array of water sport items (Chris likes his toys) and not a week goes by that we aren’t out in the boat fishing, cruising, jet skiing or paddle boarding even during winter. This time right now in Autumn is our absolute favourite time of the year, the lake is like glass every day, no winds and the most stunning skies!

Our favourite thing to do as a family (dogs included) is head straight across from our house in the boat to Point Wolstoncroft and share a cheese platter and a drink while the sun goes down.

Q: Is this your forever home?

At this stage we have no plans to leave this home or suburb. It is more then we could ever have dreamt of but if the opportunity arose to pick up a waterfront at the right price, we wouldn’t knock back the chance to do it all again!

Q: Three words you would use to describe your home?

Three words to describe our home… Simple. Calm. Ours
